The M25 holds the three busiest stretches of road in Great Britain. More M25 traffic means more incidents in absolute terms — and far more people held up by each one.

on the busiest stretch. Anything that closes one M25 lane is stopping a share of that immediately, with nowhere for it to go and no quiet hour to recover in.

35,831 light goods vehicles a day, plus the lorries. When there is a crash on the M25 it is rarely just cars — and that is why lanes stay shut longer here than elsewhere.

at 11am beside junction 14. M25 freight peaks in the middle of the morning, not in the rush hour most people picture — the midday M25 is not the quiet motorway it looks.
So the honest picture is two things at once. An M25 crash causes delays out of all proportion to how often one happens, because this motorway runs near capacity all day.
